Election Day Reflections

Good lord what a Presidential Race 2008 was....It was amazing to see the nation so involved in this election...and to see Creighton students register to vote (and then vote) in such huge numbers. It was great to see young people take the election seriously....and frankly I think we are seeing a resurgence in our country.

Say what you want about party lines and bipartisanship, but I stand here today proud of my country. We had an outstanding turnout at the polls, our young people voted in record numbers, and we have our first person of color as president! Whether you are Democrat, Republican, or Independent...you have to be proud on some level today of your country.

Meanwhile back here at Creighton--I am proud of the discussions, viewing parties, and ultimately--the fact the Creighton students went out and voted....it is good to see and once again renews my hope that the future is bright for our country!

What a fun way to start a month of Thanksgiving....as today I am very thankful for this country in which I live.

Fall is here

Homecoming is done and we are rapidly approaching mid-terms on campus. The soccer teams are both playing amazing right now and the volleyball team really is competing at a level that may propel it into the NCAA tourney. It is that perfect time of year--changing colors, warm days and cool nights.

This week and last there has been a good deal of political debate on and around campus. This week CSU is sponsoring a debate between folks running for the House and this past weekend one of the VP candidates stopped in Omaha drawing a few thousand people.

In addition to the elections and fall weather--I am VERY excited about the opening of "BOB". "Bob" is the new pedestrian bridge right next to campus spanning the Missouri river and connecting Nebraska and Iowa. NOW, folks on bike can take advantage of a ridiculous number of trail miles on both sides of the river. It is a gorgeous bridge and is lit up at night---indeed the Omaha skyline has never looked more inviting or fun!

the Harper building dedication

Today was an amazing day for Creighton. I know I often gush about Creighton...but it was simply amazing.

Here you had leaders from Creighton, leaders from the city, student learders, alumni, donors, parents, and all of the many wonderful folks who helped build the Harper Center and our new mall--it was a wonderful dedication for a facility that will literally serve students for many generations to come.

Dr. Cernech made this comment...and I loved it. New students will come in, take classes, serve others, lead their peers, be involved in the numerous leadership and growth opportunities, graduate, and some day come back and get married and celebrate---all through the doors of Harper. I liked that example....as I think it underscores the point about becoming a bluejay....the school is here for you, for your life. It isn't just an education, but a way of proceeding. A good reminder for me, indeed.
