Blogs

From what's new on campus to what's happening in Omaha, bloggers tell you their experiences without the fluff. Great days, not-so-great days and lots of days in between are chronicled below. Some posts may surprise, others amuse you, but all will inform you about what it's like to be at Creighton.

By Dr. Wayne Young on 11/5/2008 2:19 PM

Wayne Young, Jr.Good lord what a Presidential Race 2008 was....It was amazing to see the nation so involved in this election...and to see Creighton students register to vote (and then vote) in such huge numbers.  It was great to see young people take the election seriously....and frankly I think we are seeing a resurgence in our country.

Say what you want about party lines and bipartisanship, but I stand here today proud of my country.  We had an outstanding turnout at the polls, our young people voted in record numbers, and we have our first person of color as president!  Whether you are Democrat, Republican, or Independent...you have to be proud on some level today of your country.

Meanwhile back here at Creighton--I ... Read More »

By Liam Dawson on 11/5/2008 10:34 AM

Liam DawsonYesterday was a very exciting day for me as it was the first time I was allowed to complete my civic duty as an American citizen to vote for the first time.  The past couple of months I had been reading the issues not only of the president, but of the local races as well, becasue the local races to me are important too.  However the past week I felt myself on the fence in dealing with the presidential election and I was still undecided up until I darkened the oval on my ballot yesterday.  I drove 30 minutes back to my hometown of Blair, NE to cast my vote and as I was driving I was thinking to myself I now get the chance to have my voice heard when it comes to electing the next president and that was an exciting thought to me.  I walked in the doors to vote and luckily com ... Lianna Ngtoday is election day! are you an obama or mccain supporter?? seems like some people on campus were sporting their gear  today. its nice to know that here at creighton we can be ourselves and be able to express ourselves without fearing that our peers are judging us and keeping us from believing in what we want. that is one of things that i appreciate most about Creighton.

By Kathleen Hart on 10/30/2008 8:39 AM

Kathleen HartWhile standing in the check-out line at Target over fall break, a four-year-old girl asked me if the Care Bear band-aids I was purchasing were for my kids. Embarrassed as I was, being a nineteen-year-old caught purchasing a product marketed to your average toddler, I responded with a laugh and something along the lines of “I’m too young to have kids!” But after heading out with my childish novelty, I couldn’t help but think of “my kids” back in Omaha— the students of Jackson Elementary School. Every Tuesday, I volunteer at their after school program with a group of Creighton freshmen. The first day I went, the chaos was overwhelming: the running, the screaming, and the rapid-fire Spanish phrases hurtling around me. But years of babysitting experience left me ... Read More »

By Micah White on 10/29/2008 12:13 AM

Micah WhiteTimes are crazy right now with all I have going on.  I am finishing my last month as president of the Creighton Students Union.  I am trying to finish our organization's five year strategic plan, manage elections, transition the new officers, ensure that everything is in order, and a bunch of other things before I get out of office.  However, one thing is off my mind for next year: I have a job!

Next year I will be working here in Omaha at one of the Big Four accounting firms.  I will be auditing clients in town, and Omaha is at no lack for large and interesting clients.  Companies like ConAgra, First National Bank, Mutual of Omaha, Peter Kiewit, Berkshire Hathaway, etc. ma ... By Anna Budinger on 10/25/2008 12:36 PM

These last couple weeks have been some of my most stressful and thought provoking yet.  As a group we made a trip to the Dominican-Haitian border to see the market that happens two times a week.  A bridge in the DR is opened and Haitians are allowed into the country from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. to buy and sell any goods they may possibly need to survive the rest of the week.  The sense of desperation these people gave off was heart breaking.  Not only were they rushing into the DR but as soon as they had finished their business there, they were in just the same rush to get back.  The poverty we experienced was eye opening, it was like nothing I had seen before.

As I have mentioned before my service site is at an elementary school in a barrio called Cienfuego ... Read More »

By Liam Dawson on 10/15/2008 6:58 PM

Liam DawsonAs I was returning from my Cross-Country meet in San Francisco last saturday I finally got the chance to check my Creighton email and man was there a pleasant surprise.  Earlier in the week I had finally turned in my application to the Education Department in hopes that I would be accepted into the Elementary Education program at Creighton.  I was checking through email and I came across one that was from the educatoin department and it was to congratulate me on my acceptance into the program.  At that moment I could not wait to call my mom and dad.  I called my mom first seeing as she was my inspiration to become an elementary education teacher, because she has been teaching in inner-city omaha for this is now here 22nd year of teaching.  Ever since I fi ... I can’t believe the semester is already half over! I’m right in the midst of midterms, but fall break is just around the corner. Now that it’s been a while, I’m finally getting a routine down and considering Creighton “home!” Weekdays are busy—studying, going to class, volunteering, attending meetings—but weekends mean relaxing, catching up on sleep, and hanging out with friends. This Friday I saw The Rainmaker at Creighton’s Lied Education Center for the Arts. It was a charming story about a family waiting for rain on their farm set in western Nebraska. It had a few twists and it was funny, too. One of my good friends, Tyler, was “File”, the town d ... Read More »

By Lianna Ng on 10/14/2008 9:08 AM

Lianna Ngweather has taken an interesting twist here in omaha. being from hawaii- i remember it being a little bit of a shock when i was a freshman. however, with a couple of years under my belt, i can successfully say that i managed to deal with the weather changes very well! I even avoided my usual “fall cold”- a sneeze and mild headache due to the fact that my body has had 18 blissful years in the warm Hawaii sunshine and is not used to the sub 60 degree weather in Omaha. With  fall break coming up, the campus is in such a flurry of activity. My roommate remarked to me that she didn’t want to go library to study on a Sunday night because the “social scene” that exists there. Social scene? Sunday? Oh man. You must know at ... Read More »

By Anna Budinger on 10/9/2008 1:07 PM

Anna BudingerI have just recently returned from my immersion in a Campo (a poor rural villiage) and had the expereince of a lifetime.  I keep thinking that I could be in Omaha right now but instead I am hiking mountains, going to the beach and living in an entirely different culture.  The Campo I lived in for 10 days was in the mountains on the northern coast of the DR and from where we were the scenery was amazing.  We could see more mountains and valleys and the ocean on the clear days.  The people were amazing also.  They brought us into their homes as if we were family.  We were fed so much food, we didn't even know what to do with it all.Read More »
