While standing in the check-out line at Target over fall break, a four-year-old girl asked me if the Care Bear band-aids I was purchasing were for my kids. Embarrassed as I was, being a nineteen-year-old caught purchasing a product marketed to your average toddler, I responded with a laugh and something along the lines of “I’m too young to have kids!” But after heading out with my childish novelty, I couldn’t help but think of “my kids” back in Omaha— the students of Jackson Elementary School. Every Tuesday, I volunteer at their after school program with a group of Creighton freshmen. The first day I went, the chaos was overwhelming: the running, the screaming, and the rapid-fire Spanish phrases hurtling around me. But years of babysitting experience left me ...

Times are crazy right now with all I have going on. I am finishing my last month as president of the Creighton Students Union. I am trying to finish our organization's five year strategic plan, manage elections, transition the new officers, ensure that everything is in order, and a bunch of other things before I get out of office. However, one thing is off my mind for next year: I have a job!
Next year I will be working here in Omaha at one of the Big Four accounting firms. I will be auditing clients in town, and Omaha is at no lack for large and interesting clients. Companies like ConAgra, First National Bank, Mutual of Omaha, Peter Kiewit, Berkshire Hathaway, etc. ma ...

These last couple weeks have been some of my most stressful and thought provoking yet. As a group we made a trip to the Dominican-Haitian border to see the market that happens two times a week. A bridge in the DR is opened and Haitians are allowed into the country from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. to buy and sell any goods they may possibly need to survive the rest of the week. The sense of desperation these people gave off was heart breaking. Not only were they rushing into the DR but as soon as they had finished their business there, they were in just the same rush to get back. The poverty we experienced was eye opening, it was like nothing I had seen before.
As I have mentioned before my service site is at an elementary school in a barrio called Cienfuego ...

As I was returning from my Cross-Country meet in San Francisco last saturday I finally got the chance to check my Creighton email and man was there a pleasant surprise. Earlier in the week I had finally turned in my application to the Education Department in hopes that I would be accepted into the Elementary Education program at Creighton. I was checking through email and I came across one that was from the educatoin department and it was to congratulate me on my acceptance into the program. At that moment I could not wait to call my mom and dad. I called my mom first seeing as she was my inspiration to become an elementary education teacher, because she has been teaching in inner-city omaha for this is now here 22nd year of teaching. Ever since I fi ...

I can’t believe the semester is already half over! I’m right in the midst of midterms, but fall break is just around the corner. Now that it’s been a while, I’m finally getting a routine down and considering Creighton “home!” Weekdays are busy—studying, going to class, volunteering, attending meetings—but weekends mean relaxing, catching up on sleep, and hanging out with friends. This Friday I saw The Rainmaker at Creighton’s Lied Education Center for the Arts. It was a charming story about a family waiting for rain on their farm set in western Nebraska. It had a few twists and it was funny, too. One of my good friends, Tyler, was “File”, the town d ...

weather has taken an interesting twist here in omaha. being from hawaii- i remember it being a little bit of a shock when i was a freshman. however, with a couple of years under my belt, i can successfully say that i managed to deal with the weather changes very well! I even avoided my usual “fall cold”- a sneeze and mild headache due to the fact that my body has had 18 blissful years in the warm Hawaii sunshine and is not used to the sub 60 degree weather in Omaha. With fall break coming up, the campus is in such a flurry of activity. My roommate remarked to me that she didn’t want to go library to study on a Sunday night because the “social scene” that exists there. Social scene? Sunday? Oh man. You must know at ...

I have just recently returned from my immersion in a Campo (a poor rural villiage) and had the expereince of a lifetime. I keep thinking that I could be in Omaha right now but instead I am hiking mountains, going to the beach and living in an entirely different culture. The Campo I lived in for 10 days was in the mountains on the northern coast of the DR and from where we were the scenery was amazing. We could see more mountains and valleys and the ocean on the clear days. The people were amazing also. They brought us into their homes as if we were family. We were fed so much food, we didn't even know what to do with it all. Read More »

CU School of Nursing is the first in the state to offer the DNP -- the highest level of preparation for clinical nurisng practice.
Creighton is noted for innovative programs that keep pace with the ever-changing field of nursing. The DNP is designed for nurses seeking a terminal degree in nursing practice and offers an alternative to research-focused doctoral programs. The DNP is a professional doctorate, such as a doctor of pharmacy, doctor of physical therapy or doctor of medicine.
Students can apply with either a BSN or with a Master's in Nursing. I always advise students that one of their goals should be either applying to or be actively in a masters or doctoral program.

As midterms are right around the corner, I am able to take a trip with the Cross-Country team to San Francisco this week for the Gator Invitational. As a team we leave on Wednsday and will not return until late Saturday night, which is great, becasue with midterms coming up it always seems like I end up stressing out way too much. So I feel that San Francisco will be a nice stress reliever and help propel me into the right mindset for midterms next week. I sometimes feel that, because I am stressing myself out that I end up not accomplishing as much as I would have liked to...so what I am trying to say is when midterms and finals come around don't look yourself inside of a room or the library for 4-5 hours straight. Be sure you take a break every once and a while to let ...

Homecoming is done and we are rapidly approaching mid-terms on campus. The soccer teams are both playing amazing right now and the volleyball team really is competing at a level that may propel it into the NCAA tourney. It is that perfect time of year--changing colors, warm days and cool nights.
This week and last there has been a good deal of political debate on and around campus. This week CSU is sponsoring a debate between folks running for the House and this past weekend one of the VP candidates stopped in Omaha drawing a few thousand people.
In addition to the elections and fall weather--I am VERY excited about the opening of "BOB". "Bob&quo ...
